1836-1910 Winslow Homer Locations Winslow Homer (February 24, 1836 ?C September 29, 1910) was an American landscape painter and printmaker, best known for his marine subjects. He is considered one of the foremost painters in 19th century America and a preeminent figure in American art. Largely self-taught, Homer began his career working as a commercial illustrator. He subsequently took up oil painting and produced major studio works characterized by the weight and density he exploited from the medium. French Academic Painter, 1794-1880,was a French painter. Cogniet was born in Paris. In 1812, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Pierre-Narcisse Guerin at the same time as Delacroix and Gericault. He was a resident at the Villa Medici, in Rome, from 1817 to 1822. A romantic painter, his main subjects were history and portraits, and in 1817 he won the Prix de Rome. He died in Paris in 1880.
